How to Make a Camping Bed?

time2012/07/13

A camping bed must serve multiple functions including keeping campers dry, safe from pests and comfortable. Campers may be limited in the amount of materials they are able to carry and the type of camping bed will vary depending on the elements, temperature and environment. Across all circumstances, certain basic principles apply and are necessary to keep campers safe and well-rested throughout the duration of their trip.

Instructions
1.Start with a foundation to keep the bed off the ground. An air mattress is a common device used by campers to raise them from the hard ground. Some campers are not able to haul the necessary components of an air mattress on their hiking trips and must resort to lighter gear. A foam pad or layers of blankets will also work.
2.Choose an appropriate sleeping bag for the trip. A sleeping bag is absolutely essential to a proper camping bed and will not only keep the camper warm and dry but can also protect him against elements and insects. Begin by picking a temperature rating congruent with the climate. Summer bags are designed for temperatures of 35 degrees or higher; three-season bags are rated to 10 degrees; cold weather bags are rated to 10 below; and extreme weather bags are rated for -10 degrees and lower. Other factors that help determine which bag to use include the camper's metabolism, gender, clothing, hydration level and whether a tent is used.
3.Protect against insects that can infiltrate the camping tent or sleeping bag. Before embarking, be sure the tent is free from holes and any existing insect nests. Always insist the tent door is kept closed and try to check clothes for bugs that have traveled into the tent by attaching to the inhabitants. If mosquitoes are a problem in the campsite, spray everything in sight with repellent, including the camping bed, to ensure they stay away. If the campsite is in an exotic location where scorpions or poisonous bugs is a threat, research proper extermination methods beforehand and arrive on site prepared.
4.Protect the camping bed from moisture by preparing for rain, dew and frost. If not sleeping in a tent, always lay a layer of plastic beneath the camping bed to insulate it from ground moisture. It is usually a good idea to provide some sort of shelter above the camping bed in the event of rain. A homemade tent is easily constructed with a tarp and some rope and will help protect against the elements.
